This question is from Louise in Brooksville:
I have noticed that the larger subdivisions use a grass that stays green most of the year.   It grows in clumps and doesn't seem to need a lot of water, what is he name of this grass?
Answer:  The landscapers locally are trying to use water wise plants and with the square footage of the subdivision entrances they require a lot of plants.  The grass is called Fakahatchee grass or Florida Gama grass or the botanical name is Tripsacum floridanum.  This grass is actually considered a native grass and is native to rocky pineland in southern Florida. This grass prefers full sun and is very drought tolerant.  It forms a clump of mounded foliage 1-3 feet and has slender flower stakes.  Zone 9, possibly colder.
